Burgermeister
Oberbaumstraße, 10997 Berlin

This small burger stand is located in the Kreuzberg area of West Berlin and is housed in an old bathroom under the U1 Schlesisches Tor subway arch. You place your order at the window and can eat at one of the outdoor tables. I ordered a cheeseburger and asked for extra ketchup because in my past experiences in Europe, people are a little stingy with it. For instance, if you want an extra ketchup packet at McDonalds it's 15 cents! That can add up if you know anything about my love for ketchup. So I was pleasantly surprised when my burger arrived oozing insane amounts of ketchup. The burger experience was good- the bun was tasty and the toppings of tomato, shredded lettuce, pickles, and red onion were all fresh and plentiful.
My one complaint would be that I wasn't given the option of how I wanted my meat cooked and it came relatively well-done and a little bland- but as I mentioned, I was mostly eating delicious ketchup.

The Bird
Am Falkplatz 5, 10435 Berlin
A "New York" style bar and steakhouse, The Bird is located in the East Berlin neighborhood of Prenzlauer Berg. The place was packed when we got there but thanks to Ingo, my trusty Berlin guide, we had a table waiting for us. The atmosphere was inviting, and I almost forgot I was in Europe with all the tattooed waitresses and American music playing. Plus there are squeeze bottles of ketchup and mustard on every table- as much ketchup as I want!

Fries: All the burgers come with fries! Seems like a no-brainer but so many places today make you order fries separately and that just seems wrong. The fries are hand cut. So hand cut that the fried potatoes on my plate ranged from discs to wedges to thin and thick strips. That doesn't really bode well for even frying so every fried potato had a slightly different consistency. They were just ok.
Burger low-down: The Bird uses only organic high quality meat from German cows and it's ground fresh daily. I ordered Da Birdhouse burger and I'm quoting directly from the menu to describe what it is: "Two fried patties, American cheese, bacon, fried onions, ketchup, mustard and pickles. Enough grease to kill a donkey". I requested only one beef patty and from then on, Ingo referred to my order as a Kid's burger- I'm not sure what kid could eat it but I couldn't even finish it! Let's talk about the bun- it's actually an English muffin. I wanted to give it a chance, but I have to say it wasn't my favorite. It seemed a little too stiff and made all the fillings squish out when I took a bite. Speaking of stuff- the burger had big chunks of pickles on it - no flimsy pickle chips here. I love pickles so I was a happy camper. The cheese was perfectly melted and gooey and the meat was deliciously seasoned and cooked to order. Fried onions, and a lot of them, were a nice addition but the huge slab of tomato that came on the side was much too thick to put on the burger. There was a lot going on, and even in spite of the "bun" this was a darn good burger.

Auf Wiedersehen,
Bex
