A Burger in Cambodia: Lucky Burger

Bex's burger find in Cambodia:

If you find yourself in Siem Reap, Cambodia, you might treat your feet to a fish massage, ride in a tuk tuk, drink some Angkor beer, and visit some ancient temples. You'll drink out of coconuts and eat some delicious Khmer style curry. At some point you may also have a craving for a burger, and if so, you're in luck (sort of) because Lucky Burger is there!

My traveling companion and I had been eating delicious Thai food, and yes, the occasional pizza from The Pizza Company, before arriving in Cambodia but when I saw the beaming red Lucky Burger sign I couldn't resist checking out the burger. The sign obviously takes its color cues from other fast food burger joints like Burger King, McDonald's, and In-N-Out, nothing exceptional here, but the cutesy steaming burger is, well, cute. The restaurant itself is extremely bright, colorful, and clean. The employees are over the top friendly, and like everywhere else in Siem Reap, customers can choose to pay with the American Dollar, the Thai Baht, or the Cambodian Riel.

I ordered the #24 "Lucky Burger" with cheese, which is basically a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, and special sauce. Other options included the #33 "Shrimp Burger", #31 "Pork Burger", as well as chili dogs and fried chicken. While waiting for my order I took the opportunity to wash my hands using the communal sink in the dining area. I thought the sinks were a nice touch, and a hygienic one at that. Once my food arrived and I removed the burger from its wrapping, I felt a little apprehensive. The burger looked way overdone- slightly dull in color, the cheese was barely melted, and the lettuce was more white than green. I had some fries while contemplating the burger and they were ok.

I looked at the burger again and decided to go for it. I took a bite and was pleasantly surprised! I know it's hard to imagine this burger tasting good after the explanation of what it looked like, but it was actually really tasty. It was reminiscent of a fast food burger from Burger King, but I swear it was better. I think the special sauce gave it an extra edge.

So, while there are many delicious and cheap food options in Siem Reap, e.g., Street noodles, curries, seafood and so on, if you need a quick burger fix in Cambodia, I would recommend Lucky Burger. I can only give it 3 cows based on the fact that it is fast food and I can't decided if I'd actually eat at Lucky Burger if it was in NYC.

reminds me of when I was in sub-saharan west africa. ouagadougou, burkina faso. i was in that part of africa for about a month but based out of this capital city. we had to go to an internet cafe to check email every now and again, and although there were closer ones we chose this one bc my friend who had lived there for years had extensively searched for the best burger in this capital city and it happened to be across the street form this internet place. we definitely checked email way too often just to down burgers and fries. ice cold old school glass bottles of coke, fries and a burger that didnt look like much but boy did it hit the spot. he always had to take one home for the wife cuz she could smell it on him and would get pissed that he had spoiled dinner. best thing about the place? the name. wait for it.... Happy Donald
