If Bobby Flay’s Burger Palace Needed a Harem, We’d Be It

Bobby's Burger Palace from Roger Kisby on Vimeo.

Burger Club roadtripped to Bobby Flay’s Burger Palace in Lake Grove in quest of his burger.  The Palace was in the Smith Haven Mall.  Normally, malls are not known for Bobby Flay burgers but rather ill-lit food courts smelling of General Tso’s chicken and Cinnabon where adolescents loudly flirt with each other in large packs.  Yet BBP was its own space, almost tagged onto the mall.  It was an interesting blend of trendy diner and Bobby Flay’s usual color scheme of unobtrusive greens and yellows.  I had the Santa Fe burger without blue terra chips, which was one of the only burgers where the option to “crunchify” (adding potato chips onto burger) was built into the burger construction.  The burger was one of the most delicious burgers I’ve had recently.  Although it did have the age-old problem of the lower bun getting soggy.

The dark chocolate shake was incredible, supposedly made with just Edy’s ice-cream and some kind of magic chocolate sauce because it was unbelievable, and the whip cream was fresh and homemade, which you wouldn’t expect to find in a mall.  But then again this was a palace.

My favorite thing about BBP is the option to “crunchify”.  I’m a huge fan of putting potato chips on sandwiches, and I’ve even put fries on burgers, but I’ve never experienced a burger with potato chips as a topping.  When I saw the menu, there was no question about crunchifying my burger- absolutely yes!  I ordered the Palace Classic Burger- obviously crunchified- and the teenage girl that took my order asked if I wanted my burger cooked well.  Actually, she didn’t really ask, she just said “Ok, and you want this well?” like I would reply, “duh, why would I want my burger cooked any other way than well?” but when my response was actually, “No, I’d like it medium.” she responded with a weird look, and said “Ok, so the patty will be pink throughout, are you sure that’s ok?”  So anyway, this dialog is pretty pointless other than highlighting the fact that she thought I was a freak for requesting a piece of meat that might be a little pink.  Weird.   But on to the burger:  It was super delicious!  I have no complaints about the bun, patty (which was pink throughout just like the girl said it would be), lettuce, tomato, onions, cheese or potato chips.  The whole burger package was just damn good.

Fries and milkshake were yummy too.  I wasn’t a fan of the fry sauce though, it was weirdly red peppery, which doesn’t surprise me since we were at a Bobby Flay restaurant.  If this burger joint wasn’t so damn far away, I’d be a frequent visitor.

Roger:

Bobby’s Burger Palace had something going for it that I don’t think it intended. It’s in the suburbs. For me, who grew up in the suburbs of north of Dallas, it was kinda like going home. For BCNY,  it was chance to get the hell out of the city. Normally, I wouldn’t herald the suburbs like this but its been awhile since I’ve experienced this land of convenience and customer service.

BPP is run by teenagers. Seriously, I didn’t see one person over the age of 17(see the video). This may sound like it would be awful....if it was in NYC. But here, everyone was super helpful and nice. And they were everywhere! Buzzing around like worker bees.(see video again). That right there is something you don’t get in NYC. The burger itself was great. I got mine crunchified as well and I’m not saying it was the most amazing thing ever but it was an option I appreciated. Also appreciated: the sesame seed bun.
